breaking the stigma against dancers with mental illness
Victoria Ulrich (founder)
I have been dancing for over 13 years. Being a dancer has brought me a plethora of positives such as friends, discipline, and diligence. While dancing has shaped me into the person I am, it has been the root for the decline in my mental health. I’ve learned that this is not uncommon amoung dancers. Statistics show that 1/3 dancers struggle with their mental health. Through this page, I will be using my personal expirences regarding mental health to explore the correlation between mental illness and the dance world and provide realistic copping mechanisms and support to fellow dancers who are struggling.
“just because no one else can heal or do your inner work for you, doesn’t mean you can, should, or need to do it alone.”- Lisa Olivera
Statics show that 1-3 dancers suffer with mental health issues. This shows how prevalent these issues are within the dance world, yet mental health is a topic many are reluctant to talk about. This is why I created Dancers Countthis page will raise awareness, provide coping mechanisms, and most importantly give support to dancers struggling with their mental health. Together, we can stop this epidemic by breaking the stigma and prejudice against dancers with mental illness. No one deserves to suffer alone; this account will serve as a safe space where everyone’s voices are heard.
